FC Barcelona will play their first official match of the season this Sunday away at Elche, after their opening-day fixture against Athletic Club was postponed due to the mandatory rest period granted to numerous internationals who reached the latter stages of the World Cup.
As back-to-back La Liga champions, Hansi Flick’s side come into the fixture after beating Basel 5-2 and Al-Ahly 2-1 in the Joan Gamper Trophy during preseason.
Flick’s preparations have been affected by the staggered return of his World Cup players and a transfer market that continues to reshape the squad, meaning there are still several question marks surrounding Sunday’s starting XI, mainly due to concerns over match fitness and competitive rhythm.
